🎯 Our Objectives
SHARE’s objective is to support sustainable improvements in healthcare in Ethiopia, with a particular focus on the Tigray region.
We achieve this through:

✔ Skills exchange and training
✔ Knowledge sharing
✔Community engagement

⚠️ Operating During Challenging TimesDuring this reporting period, no visits to Ethiopia took place due to the ongoing civil unrest following the civil war that began in November 2020.Despite these challenges, SHARE continued its work through:

🌍 Remote project supportOur trustees remained in close contact with partners to ensure that projects could continue wherever possible.

⭐ Achievements and ImpactDespite significant operational challenges, SHARE continued to make a meaningful contribution to healthcare development in Tigray.

🎓 Academic and Professional DevelopmentA major milestone this year was the successful completion of a PhD by Dr Birke at King’s College London in December 2025.Her research focused on:
• Strengthening healthcare systems• Rebuilding services after war and conflict• Lessons applicable to Ethiopia and other regions affected by conflict
Her work has been presented internationally and formally recognised by Kings College London.

🩺 Diabetes Project
SHARE supported a one-year UK Fellowship in Endocrinology for Dr Merhawit, completed in December 2024.Following her return to Ethiopia, she became:
⭐ The only Endocrinology Consultant serving the Tigray regionThis represents a major and lasting improvement in specialist diabetes care across the region

🍲 Food and Nutrition ProgrammeDuring the year, funds were redirected to support a supplementary nutrition programme at Ayder Referral Hospital in Mekelle.The programme supported patients in the:
• Burns Unit• Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Services
Programme Start: February 2025Key outcomes included:
✔ Improved nutritional quality for patients
✔ Positive impacts on patient recovery
✔ Improvements in infection ratesSHARE also funded:
• Additional kitchen staff• Essential logistical support
Formal letters of recognition were received from:
• The Tigray Regional Health Bureau• Ayder Referral Hospital
This work would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of our Ethiopian colleagues based in Mekelle.

👨👩👧 Elroi Community DevelopmentSHARE continued to support Elshadai Wukro Children’s Village, now known as Elroi Community Development.Achievements this year included:
✔ Continued support for sponsored children
✔ Successful transfer of funds despite banking changes
✔ Achievement of independent legal statusElroi Community Development has also:
• Established a board-led governance structure• Received recognition from the Tigray Bureau of Justice

Medical Engineering activities
Infection Control programmes
Dentistry initiative
Mama Kits project
Labs
The Mama Kits project has kindly been taken over by Witten following SHARE’s pause with the project in December 2024.

• Monitor the security situation in Ethiopia• Maintain strong remote partnerships• Provide support where it delivers clear public benefit
When conditions allow, we aim to resume in-country collaboration and rebuild direct programme activities.
