Laboratory Medicine
In 2014, a feasibility study was performed at the microbiology laboratory in the Ayder Hospital by two biomedical scientists volunteering with SHARE. The aim of this project was to develop a program similar to the successful Lab Skills Africa project piloted by the Royal College of Pathologists.
Several areas of action were identified during the visit, and they are being addressed with the continuous support and training delivered by Sheffield Teaching Hospital’s scientists and medics. The Society of Applied Microbiology have since awarded funding to help facilitate this link under their International Capacity Building Fund.
The latest development has been in the establishment of a remote laboratory in a health clinic in the Gera region. We hope to continue to support the important role of diagnostic medicine, which directly improves patient care.
