About SHARE

SHARE was established in December 2000 by Professor Solomon Tesfaye of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH) and his old friend, Dr Gebre ab Barnabas, Head of the Tigray Health Bureau. Professor Tesfaye and Dr Gebre ab  called a meeting of like-minded healthcare professionals, the result of which was to set up an organisation that would channel assistance from Sheffield to Tigray.

Since then more than 70 SHARE trips to and from Ethiopia have taken place including one by then STH Chief Executive, Sir Andrew Cash. The hard work of all those involved has seen SHARE’s activity formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between STH and the Tigray Health Bureau.

SHARE now operates as a mutually beneficial collaboration between healthcare providers at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and other affiliates and partner organisations in Ethiopia. The organisation has a specific focus on the Tigray region, providing healthcare improvement through communication of best practice, skill exchange and community engagement.

It is the mission of all those involved in SHARE to establish a lifelong professional friendship between those passionate about improving health, exchanging knowledge and to build on the strengths of diversity.
